Claude Sonnet 5 became Anthropic’s default model across free and Pro plans on June 30, 2026. It delivers near-Opus quality at a substantially lower price point, with a promotional rate of $2/$10 per million tokens through August 31, 2026. The 1M token context window is currently in beta. For most general-purpose and conversational tasks, Sonnet 5 matches or exceeds the capabilities of models that were considered top-tier only 12 months prior.
